About Kiso Town
About Kiso TownSurrounded by Mt. Kisokomagatake to the east and Mt. Ontake to the west, Kiso Town sits along the Kiso River and the Nakasendo (Central Mountain Highway).
The Kiso Kaida Kogen (plateau) is known for its breeding of Kiso uma (horses), which is the only native horse breed of mainland Japan. It is a member of the association of ' The Most Beautiful Villages in Japan', a group founded as an NPO to support country villages in maintaining their traditional character.
In the old days, the area around Kiso Town was ruled by Lord Kiso, and Fukushima Castle was built there. Having built Fukushima-juku and Fukushima Sekisho (regional border control gate), the town was prosperous as the economic and political center of the Kiso region.
This post town exudes the fragrance and history of the Nakasendo and living in its valley community is the warm nostalgic sense of home familiar in the heart and soul of the Japanese.
